SYNOPSIS FOR: The Zookeeper’s Wife
The Zookeeper’s Wife is a biographical drama based on the book by the same name, written by Diane Ackerman. During the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, at the beginning of World War II, Antonina and Jan Zabinski were zoo keepers at the Warsaw Zoo.
Although the zoo was forced to close the Zabinskis remained in the villa and became active with the Polish underground resistance. Despite the threat of execution, the Zabinskis concealed hundreds of Jews as well as a variety of animals on the property.
They both survived the war and reopened the zoo in 1949.
In 1965 they were recognized by the State of Israel as Righteous Among Nations an honor used to describe non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust.
